Linen of WordsLinen of Words is a shape-shifting musical project led by Belgian-American composer and performer Annick Odom.
Originally founded as a new music collective in 2020, the ensemble began with a focus on experimental chamber works and collaborative composition. With support from Fonds Podiumkunsten in the Netherlands, the group toured nationally that summer. The founding lineup featured Annick Odom (voice, clarinet, double bass), Michela Amici (harp), Leah Plave (cello), and Julie Hasfjord (voice). Since returning to the U.S.—first to Detroit, Michigan, and later to her hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia—Annick has continued to evolve Linen of Words into a fluid, artist-driven project centered on her own compositions and reimagined folk material. The work brings together storytelling, song, and improvisation, drawing from Appalachian ballads, archival sources, and experimental approaches to sound. The debut album, Linen of Words, will be released on April 14, 2026. The record is a kaleidoscopic collection of original songs and reworked traditional ballads, shaped by over 20 musicians from a wide range of musical backgrounds, including folk, jazz, classical, and experimental music. Each track offers a different perspective, with arrangements that move between intimacy and openness, structure and improvisation. The album reflects Annick’s deep connection to West Virginia, her interest in archives and storytelling, and her ongoing exploration of collaborative music-making across genres and communities. You can listen to the album and support the project on Bandcamp, where CDs are available for pre-order along with handmade linen cyanotypes created for this release. Each purchase includes a full digital download of the album. |
